Music
Music is an important part of both the Primary and Secondary School curriculum here at the ICS. We encourage the children’s understanding, knowledge and enjoyment of music through a well balanced programme, based on the UK National Curriculum, and one which provides them with the opportunity to work individually, in groups and as whole classes. We are aware that the children come from a wide range of diverse backgrounds so aim to introduce them to music, songs, dances and instruments from many different countries, styles and times. It is expected that each child will develop their listening, performing and composition skills through a variety of topics throughout each key stage.
Music also forms an integral part of whole school events and teachers often work together to produce school productions, assemblies and performances for special celebrations such as the annual Food Fair and end of year BBQ.
KS3
Students in KS3 cover 6 topics throughout the school year along with each year group also focusing on one ‘world’ music style. Emphasis is placed upon having a good mix of theory and practical activities, including singing during each lesson and students get the opportunity to make use of a wide range of tuned, un-tuned musical instruments and ICT to further express their creative ideas. Music from a variety of genres is used throughout the KS so that no one style is explored more in depth than another.
KS4
Students who take Music as a subject in KS4 follow the Cambridge IGCSE course. Over a period of two years, all students further develop their performance skills, concentrating on one chosen instrument. Independent learning is very important at this stage and students are encouraged to seek out and attend live performances to further enhance their listening skills. Composition and the Theory of Music are taught both traditionally and also through the medium of ICT with various music programmes on offer to the students.
