Mathematics

At the ICS we endeavour to create interested and thoughtful mathematical thinkers. We aim to provide suitable enrichment and stimulation for pupils with a special ability for Mathematics, and support for those with particular difficulties. We like to develop our students as independent thinkers with an appreciation for the importance of Mathematics in the world and our everyday lives. We use a variety of teaching styles to enhance the delivery of the Mathematics curriculum. Alongside more traditional teaching we place a strong emphasis on group work and investigational activities. All our Mathematics classrooms are fitted with interactive whiteboards; we make use of these along with numerous ICT packages and programmes to enhance our teaching and learning, as well as to allow for further exploration into difficult concepts.

KS3

The breadth of study in the English National Curriculum is both extensive and challenging. Every year students are exposed to topics under the headings of Number, Algebra, Shape & Space, Data Handling and Using & Applying Mathematics. In years 7, 8 and 9 we consolidate work done in Primary School and develop in our students a secure understanding and enjoyment of the subject across all these areas.

KS4

In Years 10 and 11 we continue to build upon the work done at KS3 and students study for the IGCSE Mathematics qualification. This is examined at the end of Year 11 and can be sat at one of two levels as deemed appropriate by the teaching staff. The Higher tier allows able students to spend more time studying complex Mathematics including Calculus and Quadratic Equations. The Foundation tier gives students with less confidence time to spend perfecting functional skills that will prepare them well for everyday life.

KS5

We offer Mathematics at AS and A2 level and the flexible course allows for the study of both Pure and Applied Mathematics. Those students who demonstrate sufficient proficiency and desire can also study for AS Level Further Mathematics.  An A-Level in Mathematics is a highly regarded academic qualification and creates significant options for future study in a wide range of fields.
