Year 5M Assembly

May the Force Be with You!

What another fabulous assembly, this time from class 5M, who followed on the Science theme started during science week.  Year 5 have been learning about forces, and their assembly was the perfect platform to share their knowledge with everyone else!

In their assembly 5M were able to show the pull and push forces of gravity, air resistance and friction and what fun they had doing it! The children showed how these forces can help us in our daily lives and also in school. Despite all of the fun, 5M had a very important safety lesson for us all. Even though we enjoy slipping and sliding, there are times it can be dangerous. This is one of the reasons we are asked to wear rubber soled shoes in school - to prevent people slipping and hurting themselves!

To help us remember about one of the most important forces, 5M sang a song about ‘Gravity’.

During the last part of their assembly we were treated to 5M’s version of the ancient Greek story of father and son, Icarus and Daedalus. Imprisoned in a high tower by King Minos they planned to escape. Daedalus had the idea of flying free. They tried to use wings and air resistance to overcome gravity in the same way birds do when flying. Daedalus’ idea might have worked however there was also another little moral in this story – the importance of listening to our parents. Sadly Icarus ended up in the sea.  If only he had listened to his Dad!

Congratulations to 5M for their great assembly.  We were all very impressed both with 5m’s confidence on the stage (some future stars of screen and stage in year 5 I think) and their scientific knowledge and understanding of forces.  Many thanks to Mrs McIlwaine and Miss Shaden for their hard work and enthusiasm in ensuring the event was a success.
