ICS Science week
ICS Science week 24th January to 28th January 2010
This was, without a doubt, one of the busiest and most fun weeks of school so far.
Parents, staff and pupils, worked together to make this a “Super Science” Week. From Nursery to Year 6, children were involved in practical and fun science. Throughout the week and across the school, lots of cross curricular activities encouraged children to focus on science. KS1 and KS2 had two Science Quizzes and the response was excellent. Our winners for KS2 were:
3B Sophie B
3W Andrew
4E Mohannad Waia
4G Nadine
5M Ellie
5W Sumaya
6B Ryan
6D Matteo
Congratulations!
The week began with volcanic eruptions in the Year 5W assembly. The children were keen to tell us lots of information about volcanoes and rocks.
Mr Wilson managed to recreate a volcanic eruption on the stage to the delight and awe of the audience.
During the week our ‘Super Scientists’, dressed in their white shirts (definitely the cutest Scientists on the block!) observed the wonder of magnets, growing grass, floating and sinking objects. There was plenty of fun with hands on experiments involving magnets, water, paint and sand.
These scientists considered the properties of materials and described and sorted materials into categories.
On Thursday they had a special day observing, understanding and demonstrating magnificent Magnets, winter waterproofing, objects which float or sink and the messy changing of state of Gloop. Mrs Nasser their special Judge for the day said ”I was really impressed with the enthusiasm of the children. Year 2A won first place for their scientific knowledge and their ‘House’ layout on Floating and Sinking. Year 1S were praised for their ‘House’ layout on Gloop when all of the class drew or wrote something. Year 1V and Year 2B also received class certificates.” Congratulations to all Unit 1 scientists! Special thanks to Mrs Valencia 1V and Mrs McIllwaine, for their hard work and preparation.
Special congratulations to Lashyn Ahmad, Edita Agorvich-Lee, Dania Badran and Tara Wakeham who won prizes for the Science Quiz.

Unit 2 students spent an amazing week studying the fascinating facts about electricity. Our junior scientists had great fun finding out just how to make circuits and which materials were conductors and which were not.
After learning lots of facts about rocks and volcanoes, Years 5 and 6 turned their gaze to the ‘micro’. The science topic for the first half of this term is micro-organisms and the children began their research on these helpful and harmful microbes. In History they began by discovering the work of Mr Jenner and his work on Smallpox. In Art they used their still life drawing skills to capture on paper the growth of micro-organisms on an orange. Studies will continue in the next weeks… On Thursday teachers treated the children to studies in density, air pressure and heart rate. Mr Booth’s disappearing egg trick was perhaps the most spectacular!
We were able to organize two exciting and rewarding events during this week.
Firstly on Tuesday 26th Ms Reem and Ms Lara, representatives from BioLabs, visited Year 5 and 6. The children were given the opportunity to see some of the tests carried out by ‘full time’ Scientists in a Laboratory. This was a great opportunity for the children to realise that an interest in science can lead to work in a scientific job.
One of the comments that day was “You mean you get to do this cool stuff all day?”
The children observed how blood is typed, separated and finally examined under a microscope. Thank you to Ms Reem and Ms Lara for their time and excellent explanations. A special thanks to BioLab for the gift of sanitising pens which were added to the prizes for the Science week.
Our second event of the week was on Wednesday 27th when Units 2 and 3 visited the Secondary Laboratories to observe a range of science experiments conducted by secondary students.
Many thanks to the Secondary Science Department staff and students, who organised a range of experiments in Chemistry, Physics and Biology. Primary children got the opportunity to see secondary pupils using scientific equipment to read heart rate, make hydrogen and oxygen from water, test acid and alkalis and create an electromagnet. The Year 7’s were excellent demonstrators and impressed primary students and teachers with their knowledge and expertise – Well done and thank you!
The week ended with the Science Fair, on Thursday. Our judges Ms Tyrer, Mr Hoyez, Mr Ratty and Mrs Law had a busy, exciting and incredibly difficult job to choose two projects from each year group to win a prize. All of the projects were excellent this year and the display boards were informative and showed good scientific approach.
An incredible 68 groups entered the Science Fair with projects ranging across the science spectrum, gases, light, electricity and rockets! Congratulations to Cathra, Noor and Niamh (Yr 3B), Enzo and Miro (Yr 3W), Bengisu and Maya (Yr 4E)and Sara, Sophie, Cynthia and Gigi (Yr 4G) who won Project prizes. Also congratulations to Natya Giulia and Emilia (Yr 5 and Yr3), Bola, India, Natalie and Nuthara (Yr 5), Julia and Daraius (Yr 6) who won Project Prizes.
Many, many thanks to all parents, staff and pupils who worked so hard to make this week a success. A special thank you to Reem, who painted the wonderful banners for Science Day and to Mr Burhan and his men who moved 68 tables (twice!).
