Primary P.E.

Why is P.E. important at the ICS?

At the ICS we believe that Physical Education should promote:
a) A belief in themselves as having something of value to contribute.
b) A recognition of the value of others.
c) Independence.
d) Tolerance of others in all situations.
e) Self-control.
f) Equal opportunities in all areas of the P.E. curriculum for every child to reach their full potential regardless of age, gender, race or ability.

Primary P.E.

Our Aims and Objectives of Physical Education at the ICS

a) To provide opportunities for children to experience the joy of movement.
b) To promote physical activity as part of a healthy lifestyle.
c) To develop positive attitudes: self-confidence, pride, team spirit, co-operation, loyalty, self-discipline, self-control, an ability to deal with success and failure and consideration for others.
d) To teach the skills necessary for physical performance and improvement.
e) To ensure safe practice: children should be taught to: respond quickly to instructions, follow rules, be appropriately dressed, use equipment safely and warm up and recover from exercise.
f) To involve pupils in the cycle of planning, performing and evaluating in physical education.
g) Enable every child to achieve their full potential, regardless of age, ability, gender or cultural background.

Primary P.E

P.E. is a British National Curriculum subject compulsory at all Key Stages for all pupils. Pupils should learn a variety of activities in accordance with the programme of study, including dance, games, swimming and gymnastics. During Key Stages 2 we offer other areas including athletics and outdoor and adventurous activities.
Each of our Primary classes has a weekly P.E. lesson delivered by Coach Mohammad, Coach Wael or Coach Lamees which is taught at the ICS using the school’s astro turf pitch, hard play area or, after the Christmas holiday, our new indoor sports area.  There are occasions e.g. cross country, when the PE department use the local area surrounding the school.  This is a tried and tested route which is supervised by 2 sports coaches with a car following behind.  The route is always checked in advance.  Please be reassured that with any sports activity the safety of all our students is of paramount importance.

Each of our primary classes has a weekly swimming lesson held at the Dunes Club and taught by up to three of our coaches, depending on the size of the group.  There is a Dunes Club life guard on duty all the time our children are in the pool. The children travel to Dunes on school buses, supervised by their teaching assistant and a sports coach.  At the Dunes club there are supervised changing areas near to the poolside.

Primary P.E

All of this means that at the ICS primary school, teaching of P.E. falls well within the UK guidelines which recommends at least 75 minutes of curriculum time per week to deliver the PE programme of study for years 1 – 6.
Within Foundation Stage, Physical Development is one of the six areas of learning.  The outside learning area has been especially designed with this in mind. Children in Nursery and Reception have daily access to this outside learning area. In addition, children also have P.E. twice a week, for 30 minutes each.  Coach Mohammed oversees these classes and ensures the children all get a healthy, active time in the fresh air.

In addition to our P.E. curriculum we have a termly programme of after school clubs, teams and sports activities which support our curriculum work.  Please refer to the ‘Other Activities’ section of our website for the current sports activities on offer.  This will be updated each term.
