English as an Additional Language (EAL)

Who needs EAL lessons?
If English is not their home language, some children will need to have extra English lessons to help them access the curriculum. They will be assessed and a programme planned for them.

What do we teach in EAL lessons?
We teach the four main skills, listening, speaking, reading and writing, through a variety of activities, including fun and games (especially with the younger children). We also talk to the class teachers about the language these children need for the classroom.

When do we teach EAL lessons?
Children have EAL lessons when the rest of the class is studying French or Arabic. Beginners will have extra lessons as well and will have an individual timetable of support. Once children can manage to participate in the classroom, they leave the EAL programme.

Where do we teach?
We take small groups of children to the EAL classroom, or work in class to support them. We have a wide range of resources, including an interactive whiteboard, internet access, books and games.

EAL for parents
There are classes available for ICS parents and friends. There are currently 2 groups which meet once a week for 2 hours of conversation and practical English.

Who teaches EAL?
Ms Deborah Sharp, Mrs Margaret Tadros, Mrs Jacky Smith and Mrs Eevamaija Anderson.
